Story of Amba - In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Amba is the eldest daughter of Kashya, the king of Kashi and the sister of Ambika and Ambalika. Their father arranged a Swayamvar (ceremony of choosing husband) for his daughters. However, Amba was in love with Prince of Salwa, Shailya. She had secretly decided to choose him only as her husband and had accepted him as her husband in mind. Amba along with her sisters was abducted by Bhishma from the Swayamvar to be wives of his step-brother. Shailya challenged Bhishma but was defeated in the battle. On reaching Hastinapur, Amba declared her feelings for Shailya and said that she will only accept him as her husband. She was escorted to Shailya to marry him, however he rejected her, claiming that Bhishma had rightfully won her and knew she was to be the wife of another man. Amba, peeved by this rejection then went to Bhishma and accosted him saying that he was responsible for all her problems. Bhishma tried to convince Vichitravirya to marry Amba, but he rejected her on the plea that she was in love with someone else. She then approached Bhishma to marry her. He also refused due to his vow of celibacy. Her sole goal in life became his destruction, to fulfill which she was reborn as Shikhand, the daughter of king Drupada and the sister of Draupadi.
