Moon and his 27 Wives

Hindu mythology is a treasure trove of various interesting stories that facilitate the understanding of its concepts for the common person. One of such stories, is the story of Moon and his 27 wives.

Astronomically Moon is considered earth’s satellite, however in mythology, all celestial bodies are seen in human perspective. Considering, the same, it is said that Moon was married to 27 daughters of Daksh Prajapati (Son of Bramha, the creator). Moon was attracted to Rohini so much that he used to spend most of his time with her, ignoring other wives. Seeing this, Daksha cursed Moon that he will slowly perish and will lose all his splendour. The Moon along with Rohini worshiped lord Shiva to please him. Lord Shiva could not reverse the curse however he softened it. Because of Shiva’s blessings, Moon now increases in size for 15 days and then decreases completing whole cycle in 27 days.

Now, here comes the connection to Astrology: It is said that these 27 wives of Moon are 27 Nakshatras (from Ashwini to Revati), and that during this cycle from Waxing (Poornima) of Moon to Waning (Amavasya), Moon visits each of his wife for 1 day. Since Moon represent our mind, a person born on a particular day gets the traits of the Nakshatra depending in which Nakshatra Moon was visiting at the time of the native’s birth.

Since Rohini is most beloved wife of Moon and is overjoyed when Moon visits her, so if someone is born when Moon is in Rohini Nakshatra, the person is highly materialistic, be inclined towards beauty and creativity, is blessed with abundance. These people are calm and composed during volatile phases of life. Since Moon also represents mother in Astrology, such people gets life-long support from Mother as well.

If someone is born when Moon was in Ashwini nakshatra, this Nakshatra is associated with medicine, health, etc, such people are good healers. They should adopt a similar profession to be successful in this life.

If someone is born when Moon is in Jayestha nakshatra, as Jayestha was the eldest among 27 sisters, such natives are highly matured and good in planning. They are very popular among people. Such people are good administrators. Those born under Moon in Jayestha can do well in politics, civil services or in any administrative post.
